About Marissa CUSD #40

On behalf of the Board of Education, Administration, staff, and students, I would like to welcome you to Marissa Community Unit School District #40 where we believe that every child has the potential to learn and become a productive citizen. We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and staff.  In the past twelve years, Marissa Jr High School has  recognized as a Bronze Emblem School by the U.S News and Report and the Elementary earned a Spot Light Award from the Illinois State Board of Education in 2009.  These awards are a testament of the quality of education that Marissa CUSD provides.

The Marissa District represents four communities in two counties and encompasses 60 square miles. Approximately 550 students attend classes in either the Marissa Elementary or Jr. Sr. High School.

Technology is a key component of the instructional program and is integrated into the curriculum. With over 300 computers, students have access to computers and technology throughout the district. The district currently offers Advanced Placement high school courses to allow high achieving students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills.

The fine arts curriculum at the Jr. Sr. High Level includes Art and Music. The Marching Band is a source of pride through marching in local parades or playing at the ball games. In March of every year, a Musical featuring our students is staged on for the general public. Our Art Program continues to produce artists that have earned recognition of their talents. Elementary students are provided music and physical education designed to help them receive a complete educational curriculum.

A highly successful and competitive chapter of the FFA exists for students in Grades 9-12. This program offers students the opportunity to develop leadership and business skills as well as an introduction of the multi-facet agricultural industry.

Students in Grades 6-12 are also afforded the opportunity to participate in a host of extra-curricular activities designed to teach sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal determination. Numerous awards have been earned by both individuals and teams at the regional, sectional, and State levels.

Beginning in 2017-18, in cooperation with St Louis University, students have the ability to enroll in two dual credit math classes.   These are College Algebra and Trigonometry.  Future plans are to expand the course offerings in other subject areas.

District 40 understands that it is important to provide an appropriate education to all the students that they service.   Three sessions of Pre School for All are offered, a full spectrum of Special Education Services are provided, and last year, it implemented Project UP.  This program addresses the needs of a wide range of students.  These students receive on line instruction as well as job coaching and mentoring from local businesses.

The district is proud of its Math, Scholar Bowl, and WYSE Teams. These teams have earned honors both locally and at the state level. Students have the opportunity to earn admittance into the elementary BETA Club, Jr High BETA Club, or National Honor Society.

Marissa High is a member of the Cahokia Conference and participates in Girls and Boys Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Cheerleading, Boys Baseball, and Girls Volleyball and Softball. The Junior High School is a member of the Little Cahokia Conference and participates in Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Cheerleading and Volleyball.

The dedicated staff strives to ensure that all students meet or exceed the Illinois State Learning Standards and requirements of the “No Child Left Behind” mandate. The Board of Education, Administration, and teachers work together to ensure that the District’s Mission Statement is “Where Children Are Our First Concern”.
