Library

The library is open daily for book return and check-out. Each class has a specified day and time to visit the library and may check books out at that time. The library is a source not only for reading material for pure reading enjoyment but also for resource books for class projects and/or reports. We encourage our students to take advantage of our library resources.

Many of the books in our library also have Accelerated Reader tests that coincide with the material in the book.

What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a program used to encourage reading among students. It relies on students reading books on their level. Then, when they are done reading the book, students take a test on the computer that assesses their comprehension of the story. After the test, the students receive immediate feedback as to how they did. Students may also check their overall point totals to check their progress towards their goals.
During each quarter goals are established for each child in the program based on their current reading level and their classroom teacher's expectations. It is made up of a point goal, a book level goal, and a percentage correct goal. The point goal is established by the classroom teacher; the longer and more difficult the book, the more points it is worth. (Since the reading level of a book is based on the length and difficulty of the book and not whether the content is appropriate for that grade, some more mature books do have lower reading levels due to the writing. Please be aware of this when picking books with your child.) The book level goal is also set by the classroom teacher. It is based on a combination of factors including their STAR test results (a test that is within AR), previous goals, their AIMSWeb test results, and/or by teacher discretion. The percentage correct goal is 85% correct for every student and is the standard for Accelerated Reader.

Are there incentives for students in the AR Program?
Yes! Each week there is an AR top 10 list. The top 10 AR students receive a small prize for the week. There is also a quarterly reward for those students meeting their quarterly AR goals. These rewards vary from parties in the gym to a pizza party.
What if I have a question about Accelerated Reader, who do I ask?
Each communications arts teacher is in charge of his/her class and the goals system tends to be run slightly different in each class. If you have a question about your child and AR of the classroom level, please talk to your classroom teacher. The reading center aide can help you with finding books, taking tests, and schoolwide incentives, but that is the limit of her involvement.
How can I find out level a book is?
Many of the books in our library are marked with their AR point value. To look up the level of a book, go to: http://www.arbookfind.com. You can enter in the title and it will tell you what level the book is. You can also enter in a reading level and the system will provide a list of books at that level.
