Principal's Biography (Vince Hughes, Ed.D.)

Vince Hughes is a veteran educator with twenty years of K-12 teaching, coaching and administrator experience in four, diverse, southern Illinois school districts.

After earning a B.A. degree in education, with a minor in computer science, at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, Vince earned graduate degrees at SIUE in 2001, 2011 and 2013. In 2001, he earned a Type 75, general administrative masters and moved from teaching children about computer concepts and coaching kids on the golf course to an administrative intern program in the Edwardsville School District. Learning under inspiring administrators like Mr. John Dean Dr. Ed Hightower, Vince moved from an intern position to serve as dean of students in the Grant-Illini School District in Fairview Heights.

Upon meeting Dr. Rick Acuncius and Mr. Jim Burgett, Vince moved to the Highland CUSD No. 5 and served as an assistant principal, director of athletics, golf coach, intramural coordinator and tutoring director for the next 14 years of his career. While in Highland, Vince also served as principal of Grantfork Upper Elementary and District No. 5 Incident Command Team Coordinator.

From 2009 to 2013, Vince continued his education and earned his Superintendent's Endorsement and Doctorate degree from SIUE. With an opportunity to earn a new position in a community similar to his hometown of Staunton, he left Highland and started his new career as principal of Marissa Jr. Sr. High School.

With a love for learning, Vince has also served as an adjunct professor at Greenville College since 2011 and enjoys teaching and learning with his undergraduate students and colleagues. One of his personal goals is to challenge K-12 teachers and higher education professors to make time to collaborate.

Vince's wife, Mary, is a health teacher in the Edwardsville School District. Vince and Mary have two children. Ellie is in 5th grade, loves school, enjoys playing softball and is always excited to tumble. Grace is in 3rd grade, looks forward to the Young Author competition every school year, loves soccer and is equally excited to tumble next to her sister.
